Engaging our Community: Big Bear Lake Welcomes Feedback on Vacation Rental Ordinance

In Big Bear Lake residents and property owners hold a crucial role in shaping the future of the city. As the popularity of short-term rentals continues to grow, the City of Big Bear Lake recognizes the importance of preserving the local neighborhoods’ unique character while balancing with the economic benefits of visitors to the area.

With the aim of engaging the community in the decision-making process, the City plans to conduct three community workshops, offering stakeholders a chance to provide their feedback on the Vacation Rental Ordinance (VRO).

“We value the input and involvement of our community in shaping the future of Big Bear Lake, especially in situations that affect residential quality of life such as short-term rentals,” shared Mayor Randall Putz. “When the popularity of Big Bear Lake as a vacation destination rises, we recognize the importance of preserving the unique character of local neighborhoods and addressing the community’s concerns while gaining the economic benefits of tourism. These workshops offer a chance for various viewpoints to be shared and ultimately conveyed to the City Council.”

For years, vacation rentals have been an integral part of the Big Bear Lake community, offering visitors a getaway in this beautiful mountain town. The City’s history with VRO dates back to 1990, ten years after the City of Big Bear Lake first incorporated. Over the years the City has made several adjustments to the rental ordinance, while always keeping the community’s well-being in focus.


To foster a collaborative atmosphere, the City will host three workshops. For those unable to attend in-person, a virtual workshop is scheduled for Monday, July 31 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This workshop will be more focused on educating the community and background on the Vacation Rental Ordinance. Additionally, the in-person workshops will be held at Hofert Hall (39707 Big Bear Boulevard) on Saturday, August 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Tuesday, August 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. These in-person gatherings will include informational background as well as a chance for stakeholders to share their thoughts and collaborate in discussion.
