Randall Putz has been a local elected official since 2008. He began serving on the Big Bear Lake City Council in 2014, and was most recently re-elected in 2022. Randall has served as Mayor Pro Tem several times, and as Mayor three times in 2020, 2023, and 2026. Other City-related roles include Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Mountain Area Regional Transit Authority, Chairman for the Big Bear Fire Authority, and Director of the Mojave Desert Mountain Integrated Waste Joint Powers Authority. He has served as President of the Desert-Mountain Division of the League of California Cities and was appointed to Cal Cities' 2021 Governance Evaluation Project Advisory Group.
Randall has represented Local Government as an Advisor to the Southern California Montane Forests Project, a multi-jurisdictional collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey, USDA Forest Service, San Diego State University, and Climate Science Alliance that produced a ground-breaking conservation strategy for Southern California's unique forests. He also represented District 11 (Barstow, Big Bear Lake, Needles, Twenty-nine Palms, and Town of Yucca Valley) as a Regional Councilmember for the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), the largest metropolitan planning organization in the Country.
In 2023 Randall received Cal Cities' Larry Chimbole Outstanding Public Service Award that "recognizes elected officials who share its namesake's devotion to public service through outstanding service to municipal government, leadership and activism with Cal Cities, and high personal character." In 2024 Randall was appointed to serve on the League of California Cities' Board of Directors, and received CalCities' Triple Torch Award, its highest level of recognition for dedication to continuing education and service.
An advocate for education, Randall was previously elected to the Bear Valley Unified School District Governing Board in 2008 and 2012. He has lobbied on behalf of Big Bear at the County and State levels and is also a founding member of the Bear Valley Education Trust. Randall has spent 25 years providing marketing and technology solutions and services for corporate and government clients through his technology consulting firm, and opened Chirp Nature Center in Big Bear Lake’s Village in 2018. Randall raised his children in Big Bear Lake, and has deep roots in the community as a local businessman, longtime resident, and founding member of the Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation. He is an avid nature enthusiast and enjoys trail running and mountain biking in the surrounding National Forest.
