Quagga / Zebra Mussel
Big Bear Lake is not infested with the quagga mussel and we need the public's help to keep the lake free of this invasive species! Before launching your boat or recreational vehicle in the lake, be sure to check the back of your vehicle, the trailer, anchor, rollers, dock lines, hull, axle, live wells, bilge and motor for the invasive species. Do not launch your boat in the lake if you discover quagga mussels. Call the Big Bear Municipal Water District at (909) 866-5796 or visit them at www.bbmwd.org for decontamination information.
In most cases, these mussels are no more than 2 cm wide (smaller than the size of a quarter). They invade freshwaters by hitching a ride from infested waters. Infested waters currently include waters along the Colorado River drainage, all of the Great Lakes and their tributaries, most waters east of the Continental Divide, Lake Mead, NV/AZ and waters it feeds.
For more information and to find out what to do when leaving infested waters, click here. You can also visit the Department of Fish & Game's website at www.dfg.ca.gov/quaggamussel . |
